PortAventura, the second biggest destination resort in Europe, and the SHE Foundation, whose chairman is Dr. Valentín Fuster, have signed a partnership agreement committing themselves to working together on disseminating information and improving the health-related habits of the visitors and staff of the park. The agreement was signed by Mr. Arturo Mas-Sardá, Chairman of PortAventura, and Mr. Carles Vilarrubí, Deputy Chairman of the SHE Foundation.
The intention of the two organisations is to use this alliance to increase awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This will be implemented through various awareness-raising actions, such as the inclusion of messages related to healthy habits in the shows which take place every day in the park, the sale of the book Monstruos supersanos (Super Healthy Monsters), of which Dr. Fuster is the author, and an annual celebration called ‘The Day of the Heart’.
In addition to dissemination and awareness-raising activities, the Fifty-Fifty Programme has been taking place since July. This is a community health intervention programme aimed at park staff, the objective of which is to improve employees’ overall health by modifying their health-related habits.
The cardiovascular epidemic
Cardiovascular disease continues to be the principal cause of death by disease in Spain, with 31.7% of cases, higher than cancer (26.9%) and respiratory disease (11.4%). Experts agree that the only way to stop the increase in cardiovascular disease is to change people’s lifestyles and to raise awareness of the need to promote healthy habits.
